In the intro of the game, King Boo breaks the titular Dark Moon, causing the friendly, intelligent, and playful ghosts in E. Gadd’s lab and the rest of the valley to become mindless and hostile. E. Gadd sends his Toad assistants into dangerous locales, into places where their personal phobias could be triggered (one Toad has a phobia of clocks and is sent into the Old Clockworks), or are completely forgotten. It is also implied that he is not paying them particularly well. All in all it is apparent that he respects the ghosts he works with far more than his living associates.
